Window Testing
Evidence of a window leak include discoloration or stains on walls and sills, peeling or bubbling paint, visible mould or mildew, dampness, a musty smell, foggy or cloud glass, condensation between window panes, sagging or soft wood frames, and a noticeable draft or cold air around the window.
A severely leaking window might even cause swollen wood, cracked drywall, or damaged and wet flooring.
Water and moisture
- Discoloration or stains: Brown or yellow stains on walls or ceilings, especially near the window.
- Dampness: Damp patches or moisture on walls, window sills, or floors.
- Condensation: Fog or moisture that builds up between the panes of a double-glazed window.
- Water pooling: Water that collects on the interior window frames, or even shows up as water pooling on the floor in close by areas.
Damage to surfaces
- Peeling or bubbling paint: Paint that is lifting off the wall or window frame due to trapped moisture.
- Swollen or soft wood: Wood frames that feel spongy, swollen, or even allow a screwdriver to sink into them.
- Cracked or soft drywall: Drywall that appears wrinkled, soft, or has crunching noises around the window sill.
- Damage to floors or sills: Damaged flooring, loose tiles, or peeling linoleum under the window.
Other indicators:
- Mould or mildew: Black or fuzzy growth on or around the window frame and walls.
- Musty odor: A persistent damp or mildew smell in the room after rain.
- Drafts: A noticeable flow of air coming from around the window when it is closed.
- Difficulty opening/closing windows: Warped frames that make the window hard to operate.
